Sonoma County Focus – Farm to Pantry Applesauce Donation

Host Michelle Marques talks with Duskie Estes, Executive Director of Farm to Pantry, and Paula Shatkin, Director of the Gravenstein Apple Presidium for Slow Food Russian River about their incredible donation of over 12-thousand jars of applesauce made with gleaned fruit to the Redwood Empire Food Bank.

In an effort to stop food waste, help those in need, and reduce the impact on the climate, Farm to Pantry used the help of 275 volunteers on 150 propertied to collect 50-thousand pounds of apples that would have gone to waste. The apples were processed into applesauce by Manzana Products Company, who donated the labor, jars, labels, and shipping the finished product to the food bank. Leftover apples were turned into hard cider by Golden State Cider, and the cider will be released this spring, with proceeds going back to Farm to Pantry and Slow Food Russian River.
