Oakland’s planning director is admitting the warehouse where 36 people died had not been inspected for three decades. Darin Ranelletti said yesterday inspectors went to the Ghost Ship building on November 17th and 18th because of complaints about trash and blight. They issued a notice of violation, but no inspector went inside. An official from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said there were no smoke alarms in the converted warehouse. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf promised to take “decisive next steps” to ensure all Oakland structures are up to code, with proper exits and smoke alarms.
