Sonoma’s Olsen Park Project Moves Toward Bidding Phase

Sonoma’s Olsen Park is one step closer to a major facelift.

The Sonoma Index-Tribune reports the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission has moved the long-awaited improvement project toward the bidding phase following a final design review. The five-hundred and seventy-five thousand dollar renovation—the largest the city has seen in years—will feature upgraded playgrounds, new shade structures, and improved accessibility.

While the project is moving forward, commissioners are still weighing costs. A key debate remains over playground surfacing, with officials pushing for high-quality rubber flooring over cheaper wood chips to ensure better safety and longevity. To stay on budget, some features like fencing have been made optional, while a new public mural may be added through separate arts funding.

Construction bids are expected to open this spring, with the city aiming to commit its state funding before a 2026 deadline.
