Host Clark Wolf talks with Albert Straus, founder of Straus Family Creamery, and Chef Duskie Estes, co-owner of Black Pig Meat Co. about all things local and sustainable animal and dairy farming, and a new measure regarding so-called 'factory farms.' Measure J, written by Members of the Coalition to End Factory Farming (closely associated with the animal liberation group Direct Action Everywhere, some of whom have been arrested for trespassing at local poultry farms), takes aim at “concentrated animal feeding operations,” or CAFOs. In the wording included in this measure, that means that companies like Straus Family Creamery, Clover Sonoma, Petaluma Poultry and many multi-generational dairy farms in Sonoma County would be forced to close. None of the members on the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors support Measure J, nor does the Sonoma County Farm Bureau. If successful, the animal welfare coalition behind the measure will in essence force local dairy and meat producers out of business, drastically changing the food landscape in Sonoma County.
